Our Madurai Health and Leprosy Relief Centre ( MAHELERECEN ) is a Non-Governmental and Non - Profitable Registered Organization doing voluntary noble health Promotion and Preventive services of General Health Education, Leprosy Awareness classes, Case detection ,Treatment and Rehabilitation services for leprosy disabled among the deserving slum & rural population of Madurai District since 1991.
History of Organization
From 1991, we organized health education and leprosy awareness classes conducted in every school going children with our flip chart and slide shows. For this education we got permission from the chief education officer, District education office. During this period we detected new(fresh) leprosy cases among the school children.
Every month we conduct a leprosy clinic at the Grace Kennet hospital till 1995, after 1996, We have opened a small Dispensary (Mahelerecen clinic) with lab facility. Every month we conduct leprosy mobile clinic at in and Madurai districts and Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu, India. We are detecting new, fresh cases of leprosy through the skin check up from the school children. We identify leprosy patches among the students and they were treated with MDT treatment.
In the meantime we started leprosy rehabilitation activities for our deformity patients since 1999. So far we have supported the member of deformity patients is benefited persons is 60.
1991 - Madurai Health and Leprosy Relief Centre is registered as a Society (Registration No 184/91) under the TN Society's Registration .Act. 27 of 1975 in 9th August, 1991 at registered office Madurai. Tamil Nadu.
1992 - Awarded 12A from Income Tax Department, Madurai. & Regular work of Health education, case detection, treatment and Rehabilitation
1993 -
o Tax exemption 80G received from Income tax Department, Madurai.
o Cultural programme for fundraising purpose at Raja Muthaiya Madram, Madurai.
o Medicine donation from "action medeor", Germany.
1994 - Grant from "Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Society", Chennai.
1995 -
o First funding from WANKKAM -Belgium,
o Medicine donation from "action medeor", Germany.
1996 - Mahelarecen Maruthuva Mayam Clinic opened at Vilangudy, Madurai, which is contained Laboratory and physiotherapy equipments.
1997 - November 1997, Donor Wanakkam Belgium Visited our organization.
1998 - Number of Mobile camp conducted 24 .
1999 - Funding support from German Leprosy Relief Assocoation (GLRA), Germany, Chennai. Rehabilitation programme started
2000 - Regular work of Health education, case detection, treatment and Rehabilitation
2001 - Regular work of Health education, case detection, treatment and Rehabilitation
2002 -
o Closing of GLRA funding support.
o Free General medical camp conducted at Othakadai, Madurai.
2003 - Clinic shifted to Kulandai Swamy Building, Vilangudy. Madurai.
2004 - Regular work of Health education, case detection, treatment and Rehabilitation
2005 - Regular work of Health education, case detection, treatment and Rehabilitation
2006 - Applied for FCRA and received FCRA certificate.
2007 - Applied for funding to the CAPART, New Delhi
2008 -
o First MCR foot wear distribution camp.
o First Volunteer visit form Netherlands.
o Website Launched.
o Number of Mobile camp conducted 24
2009 - collaboration with The Leprosy Mission Hospital (TLM), Manamadurai
2010 - Extended our project area to Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu.
2011 - Number of Mobile camp conducted 24.
2012 -
o Rehabilitation programme extended with the support of Besler Lepra Hi-life corpus fund , Switzerland,
o Rehabilitation loan given to 4 persons
o NGO India 2012 all India level exhibition and conference attended at New Delhi. March 2012
o TEM, UK Health education DVD programme started to school children.
o Number of Mobile camp conducted 24
2013 -
o Fr. William Peter, Board Member of Damien-Dutton Society For Leprosy Aid, Inc, USA visited our organization in the Month of April 2013.
o NGO India 2013 all India level exhibition and conference attended at Mumbai June 14-15, 2013.
o Rehabilitation loan given to 5 persons
o First Monthly News letter launched in the month of March 2013.
2014
- Rehabilitation loan provided to 4 persons.
- Volunteers Mr Haba Cyrille and Mr Satya comming from Gunia and USA in the Month of February and April 2014.
- September 14-15 Giving Back NGO India 2014 at Worli, Mumbai.
- Mobile camp extended to Alanganallour and Melakkal block, Madurai district.
2015
- Anti Leprosy Day conducted on 26th January 2015. Donors doanted cloth to 50 leprosy patients.
